Bamboo Workshop: Kinetic Bamboo Structure 2.0

Surabaya, 4-10 August 2025

Advancing bamboo architecture through hands-on learning and experimental design

Overview

Bamboo Workshop: Kinetic Bamboo Structure 2.0 is a hands-on, design-to-build workshop that invites students to explore the architectural potential of kinetic bamboo structures. Building upon the success of the 2024 bamboo workshop in Bali, the 2025 workshop shifts focus towards an experimental environment where students can engage directly in modelling, prototyping, and scaled construction of kinetic and deployable bamboo structures.

Organised by Petra Christian University and Ciputra University, in collaboration with Parahyangan Catholic University and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, this international workshop in this year offers a unique opportunity to experiment with material behaviour, structural adaptability, and moveable bamboo structures. Through collaborative studio and fabrication workshops, participants will gain a deeper understanding of kinetic principles in architecture and material-based design approaches, using bamboo as the primary material.

Workshop Information

Theme: Kinetic Bamboo Structures

The theme Kinetic Bamboo Structure 2.0 explores how architectural design can embrace motion — not only through the mechanics of kinetic systems, but also as a conceptual framework for adaptability, transformation, and environmental responsiveness. The workshop encourages participants to consider movement as an architectural language, translated through the organic flexibility of bamboo.

Rather than treating bamboo as a static building element, this theme highlights its dynamic potential, enabling structures that shift, unfold, or react to their surroundings. It invites critical thinking about how kinetic principles can be integrated into spatial experience, sustainability, and construction techniques.

Key Higlights

Joining this workshop offers more than just technical training, it opens up a space for exploration, collaboration, and creative growth. Participants will engage in a full design-to-build process, working hands-on with bamboo while learning from experienced mentors and peers across disciplines. Whether you're curious about kinetic systems, passionate about sustainable materials, or eager to experiment at full scale, this workshop invites you to challenge what architecture can do and how it can move.

Key benefits that participants may gain by joining the workshop are as follows:

  • Collaboration with international and interdisciplinary teams

  • Direct engagement with kinetic and deployable bamboo structures

  • Prototyping and building full-scale adaptable structures

  • Technical and creative mentorship from leading experts

  • Deeper understanding of material behaviour and sustainability

  • Certificate of participation for academic and professional development
